Warmer Communities > Blog > Carlisle vs Climate Change with funding for First Time Central Heating

It’s World Environment Day – and the planet is in peril.

Global warming caused by energy demand is detrimental for the future, but Warmer Communities is helping Carlisle #GetsetforMainsGas.

Working with Carlisle City Council’s Home Improvement Agency (HIA) Homelife funding is available to Landlords, Tenants and Homeowners for First Time Central Heating which will increase property value, lower fuel bills and improve energy efficiency.

The need for energy efficient solutions is more prominent than ever and the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) are calling for Net Zero in the UK – zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Whilst the report calls for large scale changes implemented by Government policies; it is the individual who holds the most power in realising the goals.

“The bulk of our emissions derive from our energy demand”

– Committee on Climate Change

With population numbers on the increase, so too is the need for energy which means burning more fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases that are warming the earth.

Global warming from greenhouse gases will result in more pressure on water systems, human health, agriculture and will see the loss of many species.

“Low-carbon heating is needed throughout the building stock”

– Net Zero: The UK’s contribution to stopping global warming, the Committee on Climate Change

In Carlisle, there are around 40-60% off-gas properties, many of which are electronically heated and without insulation so they’re leaking heat at a dramatic rate. As a result, more fuel is being burned to stay warm.

Energy-efficient upgrades such as Insulation and efficient Central Heating systems will increase Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings and reduce the damage caused to planet. Less fuel is needed when properties retain heat so less greenhouse gases are emitted.

EPCs rate the energy efficiency of properties – A is the most efficient and G is the least efficient. The Government implemented a Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) so properties must have an EPC of at least an E before a new tenancy can be taken out. First Time Central Heating increases EPC ratings.

Funding for First Time Central Heating

“The gas boiler is not the enemy in the fight against climate change”

–  Mike Foster, CEO The Energy and Utilities Alliance

Now funding is available to Carlisle residents through the Warm Homes Fund, administered by Affordable Warmth Solutions to bring about big change at little cost. Even off-gas properties will benefit thanks to the Fuel Poor Network Extension Scheme creating Mains gas connections and sensationally, even Private Rented Properties are eligible for funding.
